Fact Fluency

One of the most important standards in 3rd grade is for the students to master their multiplication and division facts. By the end of 3rd grade, all students must be able to FLUENTLY multiply and divide within 100. I cannot stress the importance of students knowing from memory all products of two one-digit numbers and related division facts. We will begin our weekly multiplication facts test within the first few weeks of school.

How to Study:

  • Flash Cards: Fast and simple, easy to grab and go in the car
  • Dice Challenge: Partners each roll two dice and then multiply them together. The partner with the larger product wins that round.
  • Create a Matching Memory Game - (Use cards or maybe even a little treat) One item has the factors and the other one has the product
  • Multiplication War: Two students split the deck. Just as in regular war, students draw one card at a time. The student to say the correct product first, wins the cards!
  • Math Step (Multiplication Hopscotch): My personal FAVORITE - Head outside and create a Math Step board with chalk and get hopping! :)

A Few Tips:

  1. Studying each day for 15 minutes goes a long way. Consistency is key!
  2. Constantly spiral back and practice facts your child has already mastered. (Remember - If you don't use it, you lose it.)
  3. Pick any studying idea that works for your family. If you need something on the go in the car - apps and flashcards are for you. If you want to get outside and exercise - create a hopscotch board and jump around. If you love family game nights - get gaming! There are so many ways to help your child learn. The ideas are endless - GET GOING!! :)
