Go Jim Go is an annual event that supports Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is a place for hope and healing for children and their families across the Mid-South and beyond. More than 250,000 children are cared for annually at Le Bonheur Children's. With the expertise of their physicians, medical team and state-of-the-art technology, Le Bonheur Children's has the ability to care for the community's sickest children.

Le Bonheur is a not-for-profit hospital relying on the support of a generous community to provide the best health care to all children. Their care and services extend beyond the walls of Le Bonheur, providing many benefits to the community. Le Bonheur's associates dedicate hours of tutoring and reading in elementary schools, and their community outreach offers unique programs that serve more than half a million children in the region. In addition, Le Bonheur is recognized as one of the nation's "Best Children's Hospitals" by U.S News and World Report

Participating in Go Jim Go is beneficial for students. Studies show youth who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate, become responsible adults and continue being philanthropic throughout adulthood. Additionally, students who participate in community service reported feeling better about themselves and gaining respect and understanding for others. Go Jim Go is an important community program, impacting the lives of youth across the region.

This week, in conjunction with our unit study on geography, we began reading about P.W. Cracker, a parrot who decides to travel the world! So far, he has flown across the Atlantic Ocean to London, England, with a side trip to see the wonder of Stonehenge. Can you predict where he'll end up next?? He mentioned a tower almost as tall as the Empire State Building...hmmm...

Relationships

This week, the students will be introduced to our year-long theme, "We Are the World," as well as our overriding concept - relationships. Relationships are natural connections between people and events in the real world. They may remain constant over time, or they may change and grow. We will all be involved, to some degree, in a variety of relationships with family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and other people in our lives. These connections lead to valuable lifelong experiences that help shape who we become. Some relationships in our classroom have history - the shared experiences of 1st and 2nd grade - and other are brand new. I look forward to watching your children's relationships grow and change throughout the year!!

Me on a Map

This week students will also compare where they live in relation to the rest of the world. The story, Me on the Map, provides an introduction to maps and geography, our first unit in Social Studies. In the story, a young girl shows readers herself on a map of her room, her room on the map of her house, her house on the map of her street--all the way to her country on a map of the world. Once the reader is familiar with the maps, she demonstrates how readers can find their own country, state, and town--all the way back to their room--on each colorful map.
Support Drive
As you know, Campus School is in the midst of its annual support drive for CSPN. It is my goal to achieve 100% parent participation in our classroom - not to raise the most money.  Any amount is appreciated, and will go directly to helping our school succeed.  Remember, if our class reaches 100% participation the fastest, students will receive a celebratory "Pizza Party!"

Supply Fees
Just a reminder that it is time to send those Supply Fees in! The total is $25, and goes to pay for student agendas, study materials, and other important supplies for the school year. Please make checks payable to CSPN.

Curriculum Update: August 3-7

Jake Drake is excited about Despres Elementary School's first science fair. He wants to win the grand prize: a brand-new Hyper-Cross-Functional Bluntium Twelve Computer System. And he really wants to beat the third grade know-it-alls, Marsha McCall and Kevin Young. The trouble is, to beat the know-it-alls, Jake has to become a know-it-all himself. And he may just lose more than he wins.

CH...CH...CH...CH...CHANGES!

I can't believe our first week of school has already come and gone!!  I hope everyone has enjoyed it as much as I have! I realize that most of your children have had the same teacher for two years, and that this week has been a big transition - for both them, and for you. That's why I hope to see everyone at Parent Night on Thursday, August 7, at 6:00pm. This meeting will help to clarify our classroom procedures, as well as the changes that come with being a 3rd grader at Campus School. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you over the course of this year, and encourage you to join us in the classroom whenever you are able. We all worked hard this week, but we sure played hard, too...with both old friends, and new!

Meet the Crew!

They are simply INCREDIBLE!!
